Techniquest, Cardiff Bay

This kid-friendly science museum hosts monthly toddler days especially for preschoolers. It’s a great way for little kids to explore the interactive exhibits without older children getting in the way. The water play zone is bound to be a hit - just make sure to pack a change of clothes.

Plantasia Tropical Zoo, Swansea

An indoor rainforest that’s just the right size for toddling feet - it takes about an hour to explore along the flat, buggy-friendly path. The low-level viewing windows are perfect for little ones to spy crocs and meerkats, and there are free-flying birds and beautiful tropical plants, including banana trees.

The LC Swansea Waterpark

The splash zone is a dedicated space for little kids in Wales’ biggest indoor waterpark. There are water fountains, mini waterfalls, a volcano-themed slide, and giant tipping buckets to keep waterbabies busy. And you can book a dedicated Toddler Splash session most mornings.

Dan-yr-Ogof - The National Showcaves Centre for Wales, Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog

Caves and dinosaurs - what’s not to love? Dan-yr-Ogof offers a mix of indoor and outdoor activities so that you can dodge the showers on your day out. The spectacular underground waterfalls and life-sized dinosaurs are a hit with toddlers, with the bonus of a Shire Horse Centre and a farm petting zoo, too.

A staple for rainy days in the capital, this grand museum is super kid-friendly and has loads of interactive exhibits, including real shells and fossils that little hands can touch and feel. Preschoolers will love the giant dinosaur skeletons and the moving, roaring woolly mammoth. Check out the term-time Toddler Time events for dedicated preschooler activities.

Abergavenny Museum 

Set inside the ruins of a castle, this charming, quiet indoor space features historical toy displays and old-fashioned shops that are great for little imaginations. Older preschoolers can follow the trail of Mabon the Mouse, and the stuffed, now extinct, Turnspit dog ‘Whiskey’ will certainly raise some questions. Plus, there’s plenty of space outside to roam when the clouds lift.

Outdoor Toddler Days Out

When the weather’s fine, nothing beats a wide-open space for burning off some toddler energy. From beaches to forests and beautiful parkland, South Wales has tonnes of space for little feet to explore.

Margam’s Fairytale Village is always a hit with little ones. Its toddler-sized cottages and castle are made for imaginative play marathons. If you can drag them away from the tiny houses, there’s an adventure playground, a miniature train, a farm trail complete with animals, and a musical sculpture trail. You just need to pay for parking.

Lido Ponty, Pontypridd

With a purpose-built toddler splash pool featuring an umbrella water fountain, Lido Ponty is a great spot for tiny swimmers to cool off. Surrounded by Ynysangharad Park, you can keep the fun times going in the play area afterwards.

Fonmon Castle, Vale of Glamorgan

Dino-obsessed preschoolers will love the woodland walk at Fonmon Castle, with life-sized dinosaurs hidden in the trees. There are also sand-filled Dinosaur Dig Pits, complete with fossils to uncover. Explore the medieval village or hunt for fairies and dragons on the Welsh folklore trail.

Dyffryn Gardens, Vale of Glamorgan

This National Trust property has a beautifully manicured Edwardian garden, with different sections that are each fully enclosed - perfect for letting toddlers find their feet on the grass. And the two log stack play areas are ideal for little legs, too. Spot bees and butterflies while you picnic on the lawns.

Gower Heritage Centre, Parkmill

For some old-fashioned family fun, this historic water-powered mill is a little treasure. It’s a laid-back, low-key spot on the edge of Parkmill village, with mini tractors and diggers and a play area for little ones. Explore Wales’ tiniest cinema, see the old tractors, and feed the ducks.

Barry Island in the off-season is a great day out. The wide, sandy beach gets packed on sunny days in the school holidays, but at any other time of year, there’s bucketloads of space. The promenade is perfect for toddlers on balance bikes, scooters, or in prams, and you’re never far from some ice cream.

Toddler-Friendly Farms & Wildlife Parks

Animals are always a toddler pleaser, and there are dozens of places to see them across South Wales. Your little ones can meet alpacas or reindeer, pet rabbits, and feed lambs. 

Cefn Mably Farm Park, near Cardiff

A super day out for under-fives, Cefn Mably has a small animal petting zone, a collection of farm animals to feed, and a miniature train that winds around the grounds. There are also mini diggers for hands-on play, an outdoor play area, and sandpits. 

Cantref Adventure Farm, Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog

This action-packed farm has plenty to keep kids of all ages busy. Toddlers will love the animal encounters, from bottle-feeding spring lambs to grooming ponies, and the live shows, including pig racing. There’s a sand and water play area, plus tractor-trailer rides to enjoy.

This one’s not just for Christmas - outside of December, little ones can explore lavender fields, sunflower paths, and pumpkin patches, enjoy the tractor rides and meet the farm's resident reindeer herd - the largest in Wales.

Colliers Adventure Farm, Nelson, Treharris

This hidden gem in the South Wales Valleys is brilliant for getting up close to farm animals. Toddlers can get eye-to-eye with friendly alpacas, donkeys, and pygmy goats. It’s spacious yet compact, just right for little legs, with plenty of room for picnics and outdoor play.

A huge park with a working-family-farm feel, Raglan Farm Park has massive open sheds full of tractors to look at and animals to feed. Toddlers will love the alpacas, llamas, and emus, as well as the giant indoor sandpit and a dedicated ride-on tractor area.

St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff

This huge, open-air museum is brilliant for little ones. Preschoolers can meet real piglets at the working 1940s farm, watch a real blacksmith hammer iron, and munch on fresh, warm Welsh cakes straight from the historic bakery. There’s also an excellent play area. Free if you arrive by foot, bike, or public transport - or pay for parking.

The National Waterfront Museum, Swansea

This marina-side museum is a pram-pusher’s paradise, with its flat, wide-open indoor spaces. Little kids can get up close to real steam trains, vintage cars, and boats. There's also an indoor pirate play boat and a 'Rats Wearing Hats' treasure hunt to keep them busy. Free entry, but no free parking - there’s a paid car park next door.

Oxwich Bay Beach, Gower

The Gower is full of glorious beaches, but perhaps the easiest with a toddler in tow is Oxwich Bay. With plenty of (paid) beachside parking, it’s an easy hop onto two and a half miles of golden sand. The gentle slope of the beach means shallow water that’s perfect for paddling, and there’s easy access to the shops for emergency ice cream.

Garwnant Visitor Centre, Brecon Beacons / Bannau Brycheiniog

Tucked into the forest just north of Merthyr Tydfil, this site has a short, completely flat circular walk that’s ideal for short legs, featuring beautiful carved woodland animals to find along the way. There’s also a picnic area and a play park, all for the cost of a parking ticket.

Goytre Wharf, Abergavenny

A pretty canal-side stroll near Abergavenny on the buggy-friendly towpath around Goytre Wharf is a lovely way to spend a few hours. Little ones can wave at the colourful narrowboats as they chug along the water, say hello to the local ducks, and pick a grassy spot for a picnic.

Cosmeston Lakes Country Park, Vale of Glamorgan

Just outside the capital, Cosmeston is a great spot for pushchair-friendly strolls, balance biking or scooting, and fresh air. The wooden boardwalks are a bonus, taking you through the reeds and over the water. Expect dozens of ducks, swans and geese to feed. There’s also a lovely wooden adventure playground with a zone designed for preschoolers. You’ll need to pay for parking.
