Things to do in the South Wales Valleys

This rugged outdoor playground offers world-class mountain biking, UNESCO World Heritage, and deep history (quite literally).

The Valleys: Wales’ best-kept secret

The South Wales Valleys are quite possibly the UK’s best-kept secret. Rugged and raw in places, this once-industrial landscape has been transformed into a lush, green outdoor playground. If you want some serious fresh-air fun, a dose of gritty history, and a genuine Welsh welcome in the hillside, The Valleys it is.

‘The Valleys’ stretch from Carmarthenshire in the west across to the western edges of Monmouthshire in the east. Thanks to coal, and before that, iron, this region has an industrial past that picked up speed from the mid-eighteenth century. By 1913, this corner of South Wales had over 600 working mines and was crucial to the world's coal industry.

There’s still plenty of that history visible today, from the neat rows of miners’ cottages that line every valley to the industrial landscape of Blaenavon, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. But there’s plenty more, too, from hiking and biking to steam trains and ancient castles. Here’s a selection of the best things to do in the South Wales Valleys.

Step back in time: The Valleys’ most iconic historic sites

At the top of the Afon Llwyd Valley, on the edge of the beautiful Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park, is Blaenavon. Once a powerhouse for iron and coal production, the town and its surrounding landscape are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Blaenavon Ironworks, with its restored blast furnaces and workers' cottages, and take the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway to Big Pit, the National Coal Museum. Once a working coal mine, this unique museum gives you the chance to go 300 feet underground with a real miner.

There’s another subterranean experience to be had at Rhondda Heritage Park. The Black Gold tour will give you an insight into the colliery site above and below ground, with someone who worked the coal mines. And tucked away in Afan Forest Park is the South Wales Miners Museum. This family-friendly exhibition has a replica miners’ tunnel, so you can stay firmly above ground.

Much further above ground is Zip World Tower Colliery, where you can quite literally fly over the old Tower Colliery site near Aberdare. There’s an epic zip line, rollercoaster, and a massive adventure course, surrounded by the well-preserved mining structures and the Rhigos mountain range.

A legacy of Merthyr Tydfil’s iron industry, Cyfarthfa Castle is not actually a castle, but a mansion house set in 160 acres of parkland. A museum and art gallery since 1910, the collection features paintings by Penry Williams, ‘the Welsh Turner’. Wander the accessible woodland walks, let the kids get wet at the splash pad, and relax in the quaint tearoom.

If it’s a real castle you’re after, Wales’ biggest is here in the South Wales Valleys. Mighty Caerphilly Castle is the size of 15 rugby pitches. It features Wales’ own leaning tower and an impressive Great Hall restored to its former medieval glory.

Wild Valleys: South Wales’ outdoor playground

The Valleys offer top-notch terrain for hiking and mountain biking. Rugged hills, steep valleys, and wide open ridges promise thrilling downhills and epic views. But there are gentler trails, too, following old railway lines and tramroads that once carried iron and coal.

BikePark Wales near Merthyr Tydfil makes excellent use of this landscape with some gnarly trails for serious mountain bikers and gentler routes for beginners. And with a minibus to get you to the top of the trails, it’s literally downhill all the way. Hire everything you need and hit the trails with a guide, or book a daily uplift pass for unlimited riding - there are more than 50 trails to choose from.

Port Talbot’s Afan Forest Park is another mountain biking hotspot, with six trails ranging from rookie to pro, and gorgeous views of the Brecon Beacons. There are plenty of way-marked walking routes, too, including a bracing ridgetop trail and a flatter river and railway walk.

North of Newport, Cwmcarn Forest has transformed a once-industrial area into a peaceful forest. There are four mountain bike trails and several walking routes here - make the climb up Twmbarlwm for great views of Cardiff Bay and the Brecon Beacons, or stroll along the stream, Nantcarn.

You can cycle or walk along the famous Taff Trail, which links Brecon to Cardiff, via Pontypridd and Merthyr Tydfil. The 55-mile route follows riverside paths, old railway lines, and forest roads. The final stretch from Merthyr to Brecon is the most spectacular, along the route of the Brecon Mountain Railway, and above Pontsticill Reservoir.

For a more leisurely stroll, hit one of the area’s country parks. Parc Penallta in Caerphilly is a former colliery site that’s now full of wildflower meadows, fishing lakes, and miles of waymarked walking. There’s also a giant earth sculpture of Sultan the Pit Pony. Tredegar’s Parc Bryn Bach offers nature trails and an interactive sculpture trail, while the trails at Dare Valley Country Park near Aberdare follow streams and climb to views of the Brecon Beacons.
