The Ultimate Guide to Sunflowers in South Wales This Summer
Sunshine, sunflowers, and spectacular countryside views - South Wales has some stunning spots for summer sunflower spotters. And from Instagram-worthy shots to cute snaps with the kids, you’re bound to get some pictures to treasure.
When is the Best Time to See Sunflowers in Wales?
Sunflowers are summer blooms in the UK, and the best time to see the towering type is in August. But you can expect to see some varieties swaying gently in the breeze from late July to early September, too. Most sunflower fields in Wales are at their peak, sunshine yellow, during August.
Top Sunflower Fields in South Wales to Visit
Rhossili Sunflowers, Gower
With three fields and 30 varieties, not to mention glorious Gower views over Worm’s Head, Rhossili Sunflowers (above) is full of photo opportunities. As well as sunflowers, there are dahlias, cornflowers, rows of lavender, beautiful flower arches and some giant swings over the meadows. It’ll be hard to take a bad photo.
The sunflower trail has some new additions this year, too, by the wood sculptor Chris Wood, fresh from his success at the Chelsea Flower Show with his ‘Mother Nature’ sculpture. Along the trail, there are eight animal sculptures for kids to find, including a Gower pony, and clues to solve.
There’s a little food hut for hot and cold drinks and snacks. But take it easy on the tea - the loos are a 20-minute walk away in the car park, which is owned by the National Trust. If the weather’s fine, the site stays open until sunset. Check their social media channels for details.
Pencoed Fach Farm, Blackwood
This small family-run organic farm in the Welsh Valleys is home to The Littlest Dairy, which is open daily. Its sunflower fields are open over the summer - check their socials for exact dates and opening hours (it depends on the first blooms, possibly around late July). This is a working farm, and the sunflower fields are weather-dependent, so best to check the schedule before you head over.
There’s always the Littlest Dairy to visit, though, with its heavenly homemade ice cream, fresh milkshakes and snacks. And there are usually some animals to spot in the meadow. The summer sunflower season brings tractor rides and face painting, too. And there’s plenty of free parking.
Clearwell Farm, Michaelston-Y-Fedw, Cardiff
Just outside Cardiff, Clearwell Farm (above) kicks off its sunflower season on 31st July with a weekend-long food and cider festival. There’ll be 25 ciders to choose from, street food vendors and live chef demos, plus entertainment including live bands, DJ sets, and circus acts.
If you can’t make the opening weekend, the sunflower patch and maize maze are open from Wednesday to Sunday during August, plus the August Bank Holiday Monday. Saturdays feature a circus workshop for kids, and on Sundays, little ones can meet the walkabout characters Bumble and Bee. On 12th August, there’s a special Dino Day, and every week features a different line-up of food stalls.
In the evenings, the Sunset Sunflower Bar will open for cocktails by the blooms, and there’ll be live music and DJ sets every Friday and Saturday. Look out for yoga and pilates sessions among the sunflowers, too.
This is a popular one, so best to book in advance.
Ty Poeth Farm, Llanvihangel Crucorney, Pontypool
This family-run working farm near Pontypool is open to visitors for seasonal events, including sunflower displays and pick-your-own soft fruits. In the summer season, Ty Poeth (above) is open daily for PYO, and the yellow blooms are expected to make an appearance early in August. Keep an eye on their socials for exact dates.
Wander through the sunflower fields alongside the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal, let the kids loose in the maize maze, and pick some strawberries for your picnic. There’s a little farm shop selling farm-reared meats, farm-grown vegetables and flowers, and some lovely local produce, including honey and milkshakes.
Ty Poeth is open daily over the summer, from 9am to 6pm, and there’s free parking at the Ty Poeth farm shop.
Frequently asked questions
- Are dogs allowed at sunflower fields in South Wales?
Yes, most places welcome dogs on leads, including all of the sunflower fields listed here. Clearwell Farm allows dogs after 2pm. And Pencoed Fach Farm has a bookable, secure dog-walking field where you can let your dog run around off the lead, plus a dog-washing station.
- Do I need to book sunflower fields in advance?
If you’re heading to Clearwell Farm, it’s best to book in advance - the special events can be popular. The others operate a more relaxed, pay-on-entry system. It’s best to check opening times and days online before you travel - working farms sometimes need to close to the pubic.

Keep in mind that these are fields, often on working farms, so wear suitable footwear - if it’s been raining, it could be muddy.
