Review: Sunday Lunch at The Old White Horse Inn, Pontneathvaughan
Work up your appetite with a walk in Waterfall Country in the Brecon Beacons, then enjoy a fantastic Sunday lunch at The Old White Horse Inn, in Pontneathvaughan.
After a lovely morning exploring Henrhyd Falls and the Nant Llech river walk we headed to our Sunday lunch reservation at The Old White Horse Inn in Pontneathvaughan. The walk had definitely made us work up an appetite, and the reviews we'd seen online had us eagerly anticipating our lunch.
Setting & Atmosphere
The Old White Horse Inn is nestled in the heart of Pontneathvaughan, and is the epitome of classic country pub charm. Heading inside we were welcomed with the warmth of the roaring log fire, well-worn oak tables, soft lighting, and a cosy, friendly feel. It's a relaxed atmosphere, with families, couples, and groups of friends enjoying dinner. We were in our walking attire and didn't feel out of place at all, but similarly we could tell others we dressed a little more formally.
Service & Hospitality
We made sure to book in advance as we heard it gets busy, and we were pleased we had done. Greeted with smiles, we were immediately shown to our table and given menus, but the only decision we faced really was chicken, beef, or lamb, well, it had to be lamb! The staff were all friendly and attentive, making us feel welcomed and at home, absolutely what you'd expect from a traditional country pub.
The Sunday Lunch
When you've worked up an appetite there's no better feeling than a good looking dinner brought to your table! Our beautifully presented lamb dinners arrived - plenty of lamb, roasties, roast veg, dinky sausage, gravy, I was happy... and then the rest came! An extra bowl of steaming veggies, a bowl of mash, and boat of thick gravy, plus we had ordered cauliflower cheese as an extra. It might get me in trouble at home, but this was one of the best roast dinners I've ever had - homecooked, delicious, and generous portions.
Always Room For Pudding!
After a little break it was time for dessert, the only trouble was knowing which to choose - there are so many options, with cheesecakes, traditional puddings, sundaes, and various others, as well as a specials board. We thought about sharing but couldn't decide between warm or cold, so went for one of each. Between us we shared a jam sponge, served warm with hot custard, and a Nutella cheesecake, served with pouring cream. Both were delightful, and rounded off our Sunday lunch perfectly.
Value & Overall Experience
For Sunday lunch for two we paid £59, which included both our meals with cauliflower cheese as an extra, a non-alcoholic drink each, and two desserts, including a tip, which I we thought was excellent value for money. Portion sizes were generous, the service was too, and next time we're in the area we'll definitely be looking to return.
Beef or chicken Sunday lunch is £15.95, lamb is £16.95, vegetarian and vegan options are also available, as well as a children's menu.
