Alcotraz couple, could be a great first date idea

High-Energy & Competitive Dates

Do away with any first-date awkwardness and book a high-octane activity for two, or throw yourself into an experience that’s guaranteed to give you something to talk about. These icebreaker options are just as fun for long-standing couples, too - they might even expose a new side to your beau.

Socialites will love the totally immersive experience of Alcotraz Cardiff. Get locked up together in this penitentiary-come-cocktail bar, complete with orange jumpsuits. Smuggle in some contraband booze, and the inmate bartenders will put their mixology skills to the test. But be warned - to get the most out of this hilarious experience, you’ll have to play along.

If drinking in jail is not your thing, how about some mini golf for grown-ups? Golf Fang mixes crazy golf with graffiti, cocktails, and live DJs. The over-the-top themed holes offer a conversation starter at every corner, and there are plenty of spots to strike a pose for socials. As well as a safe bet for a first date, it’s also a great place for a double date.

More neon nostalgia can be found at NQ64 Cardiff, which has a great collection of retro arcade machines - but you’ll have to bring your loud voice, especially on Friday or Saturday nights.

Axe-throwing may not be everyone’s idea of a romantic night out, but it’ll certainly take the pressure off the small talk. And if you’re part of a competitive couple, Boom Battle Bar is a great option for a memorable date night in Cardiff. Just be sure to book in advance - axe throwing is surprisingly popular. Try a weeknight if you’d rather avoid the big crowds, but don’t expect a quiet one.

Bowling is always a fun thing to do at night or in the day, and you can take it up a notch at Roxy Lanes. This relaxed and unpretentious venue in the city centre has ten-pin bowling, ice-free curling, American pool, and Shuffleboard. Throw in some pizza and a few cocktails, and it’s still a good-value option.

If you’re after a date night that can double as a party night, book a table for two at The Piano Works. The atmosphere here is electric, and you can learn a lot about someone from their taste in music. Write your favourite tune on the request slip, and dare to sing along when the insanely talented house band plays your song. For a more relaxed, piano lounge vibe, book an early evening slot before the live band arrives.

Sophisticated & Romantic Dates

Some occasions demand something a little more sophisticated - perhaps a special anniversary, or that all-important second date. Cardiff’s not-so-secret speakeasy circuit is full of dimly lit, intimate spaces perfect for quiet conversation, refined drinks, and an impressive date night.

Tucked beneath Pasture on one of the city’s busiest streets, Nightshade is the antithesis of the world above. This plush cocktail joint with its red velvet seating has only a handful of tables, so you’ll need to book in advance. The entrance is through a velvet door in the restaurant’s private dining vaults, making it feel like a secret. Perfect for a pre-dinner drink or a sophisticated nightcap.

Cwtch Me If You Can

Another secret door in the city centre leads to The Dead Canary, a candlelit cocktail lounge with a 1920s private-members-club vibe. Expect expert mixologists and a drinks menu that reads like a storybook, inspired by Welsh myth and legend. Booking is essential, especially at the weekend - no one wants a disappointed date.

Hidden in plain sight on Cardiff’s ‘chip alley’ is the sleek and scientific cocktail lounge, Lab22. This dark and moody venue is known for its molecular mixology, with drinks that arrive in smoking bell jars and cocktails you have to set on fire. It’s another venue you’ll have to book in advance - Moonshine Mondays are the night for live jazz and candlelit tables.

If you're after a proper dinner date, The Potted Pig mixes speakeasy vibes with a bistro atmosphere and some excellent modern Welsh cooking. Dine under the brick-barrelled ceilings of an abandoned bank vault, complete with vintage bank safes and original bars. The signature potted pig with sourdough and the slow-cooked pork belly are the standout dishes, and there’s an impressive gin selection, too.

Date Nights in Cardiff Bay

Cardiff Bay has dozens of dinner options and plenty of places for a drink. Combine these with the cinema, or a show at the Wales Millennium Centre, and you have the perfect package for a classic date night. The Glee Club is a great option, with food and entertainment all-in-one. And laughing together is a great way to bond, but you might want to avoid the front row if you’re on a first date.

Or, you could do something more daring and take a jet-powered boat trip out past the barrage and into the Bristol Channel. Just make sure it’s a sunny day, so you can dry off with a drink and soak up the waterside views afterwards.

The Botanist’s outdoor terrace was made for sunny evenings and summer dates, with glorious views of the Bay. Book a table to coincide with sunset for that holiday feel. And inside, there’s live music every Friday and Saturday evening. Alternatively, Picton & Co is a more intimate dining spot. Deli by day, and dining destination by night - this is a great spot to share small plates and linger over good wine. Booking is a must.

For a serene start to your Cardiff Bay date night, opt for a water taxi from Bute Park. There are regular services throughout the day, and they run until the late afternoon. But you’ll have to find another way home if you plan to stay out beyond teatime.

Neighbourhood Date Nights

Cardiff’s bustling neighbourhoods are full of date night treats. Stay local or go and explore a new part of town. Some of our favourites include Heaneys in Pontcanna (pictured), and its sister bar, Usice. Heaney’s offers a fine-dining experience without the stuffiness of a posh restaurant, while Usice next door is a smaller, more intimate wine-and-oyster bar that’s perfect for a casual-but-sophisticated evening.

Not too far away in neighbouring Canton is Sonder, a stylish but unpretentious eatery with exposed brick walls and an upbeat soundtrack. By day, it’s brilliant for brunch, and at night it’s a relaxed, candlelit bistro. And out by leafy Victoria Park is fancy-but-cosy Hiraeth, with its open kitchen, and a blow-the-budget, hyperlocal menu guaranteed to make a date night impression. The three–course set lunch during the week is a more affordable option.

Alternative Cinema Nights

Cinema dates have been de rigueur since your granny was a girl. But in Cardiff, a trip to the movies doesn’t have to mean the latest blockbuster at the Odeon IMAX. Although that can be quite fun, too.

Combine a film with a dinner date at the luxurious Everyman Cinema in Cardiff Bay, where you can cosy up on a plush velvet sofa and order cocktails, wine, and hot food to your seat. Or mix dinner and craft beers with an independent film at Chapter in Canton.

For a private screening experience like no other, it has to be Cosy Cinema. Hire a private, soundproof pod set up for streaming, and kick back on the king-size bed for the ultimate Netflix-and-chill night with a 92-inch screen. Staff can dial up the romance factor, too, with rose petals, banners, and balloons on request. Perfect for an anniversary treat, or even a proposal!

The "Something Different" Dates

If you’re over romantic restaurants and want some more unique date ideas in Cardiff, how about throwing some pots? Cardiff Pottery Workshops run regular date nights at their Llandough workshop. Less Ghost and more clay-date, this tactile activity is messy and hilarious, and you each get to make a bowl to take home.

Another fun thing to do is a Cardiff Treasure Hunt - it’s a great way to explore the city, and gives you plenty to chat about along the way. There are a few to choose from, including the ‘old school’ Cardiff Treasure Hunt by The Great Game, where the treasure is a city centre pub with a discount, and the app-based Cardiff Quest by Go Quest Adventures.

Alternatively, cosy up over a quest of another kind at Chance & Counters. With more than 650 board games to choose from, this game-based cafe-bar will cut awkward silences to a minimum. Ask the staff to recommend an easy-to-learn game for two, and settle down with some banging comfort food and a craft beer.

What You’re In To

Hopefully, you’ve found your perfect date night in Cardiff among the list of things to do in the city here. Whether you’re after activity dates, romantic restaurants, or fun things to do in Cardiff for couples, the city has so many options. Don’t forget to explore the different neighbourhoods too, you’ll find some local gems that are definitely worth a trip across town.
