Big Pit National Coal Museum
About
Big Pit National Coal Museum in Blaenavon, Torfaen, offers a powerful glimpse into the heart of South Wales’ industrial past. Once an active coal mine operating from 1880 until its closure in 1980, the site is now part of the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape UNESCO world heritage area.
Visitors can explore original colliery buildings such as the winding engine house, Pithead Baths and blacksmith’s forge, learning how miners lived and worked through compelling exhibitions and restored artefacts on the surface.
The highlight of a visit is the underground tour, where guests descend around 300 ft into the original mine workings, accompanied by real former miners. This immersive walk through narrow tunnels offers a visceral sense of what life was like at the coal face, complete with helmet, lamp and powerful storytelling. Above ground, the multimedia “King Coal” galleries, Pithead Baths displays and Lamp Room with live canaries add depth and context.
Admission to the museum is free, though booking is required for the underground tour; the experience is accessible, educational and unforgettable for all ages.
