South Wales Easter Activities
Easter in South Wales means egg hunts at castles, trails through country parks and the first proper weekend of the year for a day out. Here is what is on across the region.
When is Easter?
Easter moves each year, which is why it catches people out. It falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox, so it can land anywhere between late March and late April.
In 2027, Good Friday falls on 26 March, Easter Sunday on 28 March and Easter Monday on 29 March. Friday and Monday are bank holidays in Wales, giving a four-day weekend, and the Welsh school Easter holidays usually run for around a fortnight spanning it, so there is far more on than just the long weekend. Exact school dates vary between local authorities and are worth checking with your own council.

What’s open in South Wales over Easter?
Easter is one of the busiest weekends of the year for attractions in South Wales, and the vast majority are open right through it. Cadw sites including Caerphilly, Chepstow and Raglan castles, the National Trust properties, the free national museums and the region’s country parks all typically open across the four-day weekend, and many run additional Easter activities.
Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays, which in practice means attractions are open and often at their busiest, while some smaller independent businesses may close. Shops in cities and larger towns generally trade as normal on Good Friday and Easter Monday, with reduced hours on Easter Sunday.
Public transport runs a reduced timetable over the Easter weekend, and engineering works on the rail network are common over bank holidays, so if you are travelling by train it is worth checking before you set out.
Easter is also the point in the year when a lot of seasonal businesses along the coast open for the season. Beach cafés, attractions and outdoor activity operators in Tenby, Porthcawl and around the Gower often treat Easter as their starting line.
Free Easter activities in South Wales
Not everything at Easter costs money. A number of castles and attractions across South Wales run free Easter trails and activities, particularly those in council-run parks, and the free national museums often programme Easter craft and family sessions at no charge beyond any parking.
Shopping centres across the region regularly run free Easter events including character appearances and craft sessions, and many town centres hold Easter markets and family days.
Beyond organised events, Easter is one of the best times of year to be outdoors in South Wales at no cost at all.
