Chepstow Castle
About
Chepstow Castle is a magnificent Norman fortress perched dramatically atop a limestone cliff overlooking the River Wye. Founded in 1067 by William FitzOsbern, it stands as the oldest surviving post-Roman stone stronghold in Britain and showcases the evolution of castle architecture across centuries. Built upon by figures such as William Marshal, Roger Bigod and the Earl of Worcester, the castle reflects over 900 years of history through its Great Tower, curtain walls and well-preserved interiors.
Today, the castle is managed by Cadw and welcomes visitors to explore its extensive ruins, climb Marten’s Tower and walk along the battlements. Audio guides, exhibitions, a gift shop and seasonal events such as medieval re-enactments make it a lively and educational experience. Families, history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike can enjoy its heritage while taking in sweeping views across the Wye Valley.
