About Cadw

Cadw is the historic environment service of the Welsh Government, dedicated to protecting, conserving and promoting Wales's rich heritage. Its name means "to keep" or "to protect" in Welsh, and it oversees some of the country's most significant castles, abbeys, chapels and historic landscapes. In South Wales, Cadw cares for iconic sites such as Caerphilly Castle, Tintern Abbey, Castell Coch and Chepstow Castle, allowing visitors to explore centuries of history in settings that have shaped the nation's story.

Beyond conservation, Cadw brings history to life through exhibitions, re-enactments, educational programmes and seasonal events that attract families, schools and history enthusiasts alike. It also plays a vital role in supporting communities, encouraging sustainable tourism and ensuring Wales's past is accessible to everyone. Whether through large-scale monuments or hidden gems tucked into the countryside, Cadw helps connect modern Wales to its remarkable past.
