About

Weobley Castle, located on the Gower Peninsula, South Wales, is a 14th-century fortified manor house overlooking the Llanrhidian salt marshes and the Loughor estuary. Built by the de la Bere family, the castle features a gateway, hall, kitchen, chapel block, and east range surrounding a central courtyard. Constructed primarily from rubble masonry with sandstone detailing, it was designed as a wealthy residence rather than a military fortress, with private chambers, latrines, and a cistern for rainwater storage.

Over the centuries, Weobley Castle has seen numerous owners and historical events. It was damaged during Owain Glyndŵr’s rebellion in the early 15th century and later came under the ownership of Sir Rhys ap Thomas, a key supporter of Henry Tudor. Following changes in ownership and eventual bequest to the state, the castle is now managed by Cadw. Visitors can explore the remains, admire the medieval architecture, and enjoy the scenic views of the surrounding estuary and countryside.
