About
This is your chance to take in the spectacular views of the Bristol Channel as well as the Somerset and Welsh coastlines with this fantastic boat trip and island visit departing from Cardiff Bay.
Steep Holm is a secluded island in the Bristol Channel, designated as a nature reserve, bird sanctuary and Site of Special Scientific Interest. It is especially noted for its rare flora, including the wild Mediterranean Peony that blooms in May. Surrounded by sweeping views of the Somerset and Welsh coastlines, the island offers a peaceful escape where visitors can spend 10 to 12 hours exploring dramatic cliff tops, historic structures and open grassland.
The landscape is rugged, with a moderately steep climb to the summit, which may not be suitable for those unsteady on their feet or very young children. Wildlife varies with the seasons and can include large colonies of gulls, Cormorants, Peregrine Falcons, Ravens and Muntjac deer. The island’s rich history is visible in its Victorian gun emplacements with original seven ton cannons, Second World War defences, underground ammunition stores and even a repurposed German field railway once used to transport wartime supplies. Visitors can also view artefacts in the exhibition space and, at certain times, take part in ongoing archaeological excavations.
