About

Castell Coch, or the "Red Castle", is a fairytale-like Gothic Revival masterpiece perched on a wooded hillside above Tongwynlais, just north-west of Cardiff. Rebuilt in the late 19th century by architect William Burges for the Third Marquess of Bute, it combines lavish Victorian design with medieval inspiration. The castle features conical turrets, ornate interiors and intricate furnishings, while retaining remnants of the original 13th-century fortification built by Gilbert de Clare, linking this romantic folly to real history.

Today, Castell Coch is managed by Cadw and open to the public as a heritage site. Visitors can explore its theatrical rooms, climb the battlements, and wander through the surrounding ancient beech woodland, which is a protected Site of Special Scientific Interest. Facilities include exhibitions, a gift shop, accessible paths and scenic walking routes, making it a favourite destination for families, history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
