Cardiff Bay Barrage
About
Cardiff Bay Barrage is a striking 1.1km embankment stretching between Cardiff Docks and Penarth Head, opening in 2001 and transforming the tidal bay into a permanent freshwater lake. Its flat, step‑free walkway makes it perfect for cycling or a leisurely walk, offering superb views across Cardiff Bay and out to the Severn Estuary.
As part of the Cardiff Bay 10km walking route, it forms a scenic and accessible link between Mermaid Quay in Cardiff Bay and Penarth Marina, and is also incorporated into the Wales Coast Path.
Along the embankment you’ll find a well‑equipped children’s play area, plus a Skate Plaza and an adiZone outdoor gym for older kids and adults alike. Exhibition panels, quirky public art such as “The Enormous Crocodile”, and the award‑winning RSPB‑run Hafren Café offer refreshments and tidal insights.
Parking is available in and around Cardiff Bay, with plenty of options of street parking and several large car parks, or there's a car park at the Penarth Marina end of the Barrage too.
Whether you’re walking the full 10km Bay Trail or simply spending time outdoors with family, the barrage combines fresh air, leisure and scenic appeal in one accessible location.
