Sugar Loaf Mountain
About
Sugar Loaf Mountain, near Abergavenny in Monmouthshire, is one of South Wales’s most iconic peaks and a favourite with walkers seeking stunning views. Part of the Black Mountains within the Brecon Beacons National Park, it rises to 596 metres and offers a relatively gentle climb compared with some of the region’s higher summits. The walk to the top rewards visitors with panoramic views stretching across the Usk Valley, the Brecon Beacons and, on clear days, as far as the Bristol Channel.
The mountain is surrounded by heather-clad slopes, open moorland and pockets of woodland, making it a haven for wildlife and a beautiful place to explore year-round. Several waymarked routes of varying lengths lead up to the summit, catering for both casual walkers and more experienced hikers.
The Fairfield car park (NP7 5SG, near Sugar Loaf Vineyards) is generally seen as the best option for parking, as it's a shorter walking route and arguably easier access. Alternatively you can use the Llanwenarth car park, but this is along narrow lanes
