Oystermouth Castle

Perched on a hillside above Mumbles with commanding views across Swansea Bay, Oystermouth Castle is one of the finest medieval castles on the Gower Peninsula. It has origins dating back to the 12th century and was the stronghold of the de Braose family, the Norman lords who held the lordship of Gower throughout the 13th century. Now a Grade I listed building and scheduled Ancient Monument, this well-preserved Norman ruin has survived siege, fire and centuries of change to become one of Swansea's best-loved historic landmarks. It is cared for by the City and County of Swansea alongside the Friends of Oystermouth Castle, who run the attraction and organise a lively programme of events.

A major conservation project has stitched the ruins back together and opened up parts of the castle that had been hidden for generations. Visitors can explore a medieval maze of deep vaults, secret staircases and former banqueting halls, then climb to the ramparts for panoramic views over Mumbles and Swansea Bay. A modern glass bridge, suspended high within the walls, lets you walk out over the heart of the castle and take in the scale of the building from above. Look out too for the rare 14th-century wall paintings and medieval graffiti preserved in the chapel.

Throughout the open season, the castle hosts a busy calendar of family-friendly events, from open-air theatre and living history days to popular Halloween ghost trails. Free guided tours led by knowledgeable volunteers run several days a week, offering an engaging introduction to the castle's history, architecture and archaeology. A visitor centre with an audio-visual presentation brings the story to life and is accessible to those who find the steep terrain difficult. With its blend of history, dramatic views and hands-on exploration, Oystermouth Castle makes a memorable day out for families, history enthusiasts and anyone visiting the Mumbles and Gower coast.

Parking at Oystermouth Castle

Parking on Castle Avenue, the dead-end street leading up to the castle, is very limited. The most reliable options are the three pay and display car parks at the bottom of Oystermouth village along Mumbles Road, close to the seafront, with the Underhill car parks at the top of the village as a useful backup when the seafront ones are full. From either, it is a short uphill walk to the castle entrance. Oystermouth can get very busy during the summer months, so arriving early is advisable. The castle is also served by local buses from Swansea, with the nearest railway station around five miles away in the city centre.

Prices

Admission is purchased on arrival. Standard entry is £6, with concessions at £4 and a Swansea Passport to Leisure (PTL) rate of £3. A family ticket for two adults and up to three children costs £18, or £12 for one adult with up to three children, and children under five go free. A season pass is also available on enquiry at the castle. Guided tours are included free with the cost of admission.
