About

Brombil Reservoir, nestled in the valleys of Margam near Port Talbot, South Wales, is a striking spot famed for its vivid turquoise-blue waters and tranquil hillside setting. Once a flooded colliery, the reservoir lies more than 100 feet deep and is set against the dramatic backdrop of forested slopes and distant steelworks. Its unusual colour comes from limestone minerals that leach into the water, creating a captivating contrast with the surrounding greenery. The site is perfect for nature lovers, photographers and hikers, though swimming is strongly discouraged due to hidden dangers and toxic algae conditions.

Access to the reservoir is via a public footpath from a small residential lane reached by postcode SA13 2SR. From the start, the walking route passes through woodland alongside the Arnallt River and over wooden footbridges. Two main options diverge: a steeper mountain route offering panoramic views across the reservoir, or a gentler path leading directly to the water’s edge. The full circular walk covers approximately 5 km and takes around 90 minutes, with well‑marked trails throughout.

There is no official car park, so make sure you park considerately to avoid causing obstruction to local residents.
